Stories Written in Stone

: International Symposium on Chert and Other Knappable Materials

    <content1>
Fifth Arheoinvest Symposium. ‘Stories Written in Stone’: International Symposium on Chert and Other Knappable Materials
20–24 August 2013
"Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi, Romania. http://arheoinvestsymposium.uaic.ro/stone

As far as raw materials go, chert and other knappable stone stand out as some of the most common materials in the archaeological record, and at some sites the only preserved material. They were used in almost every corner of the world, from the Palaeolithic up until today. Use of these materials even predates the appearance of our own species. Being so widespread both geographically as well as chronologically, this topic merits a global meeting of researchers to discuss and compare our findings.
This conference will cover all aspects of knapped stone raw materials from geological origin, to mining, usage, and laboratory analyses on these materials. Although we expect that there will be more focus on chert and other microcrystalline quartz varieties, we also encourage presentations related to other knappable materials such as obsidian, quartzite, rhyolite and others. Papers will be accepted on any culture or time period. Whether you are a field archaeologist, laboratory researcher, ethnographer or a modern day knapper yourself, come tell your stories.
Main Sessions
The symposium will focus on two major themes: (1) the chaîne opératoire of knapped stone artefacts, and (2) auxilliary sciences related to lithics (in particular microcrystaline quartz).
Theme 1 - Chaîne opératoire
- Raw material exploitation strategies — mining and surface collecting
- Ancient lithic trade and economics
- Stone tool production and processing techniques
- Use-wear analyses — signs of usage on stone tools (a.k.a. traceology)

Theme 2 - Auxilliary sciences
- Microcrystaline quartz as a geological material
- Characterising lithic sources
- Lithotheques — collections of comparative raw materials
- Gemology — Microcrystaline quartz as a gemstone today and in the past

Sessions Proposals
We are pleased to invite proposals for themed sessions, round table discussions or workshops for the upcoming symposium. Sessions are invited on current issues and research in the field of microcrystaline quartz (knapped or otherwise) or knappable materials in general. Sessions may be specific to methodology, regional research, or any other theme.
More information
For more information, please visit the symposium website, or contact Otis Crandell (otis.crandell@ubbcluj.ro) or Vasile Cotiugă (vasicot@uaic.ro).
This symposium is organised by Arheoinvest – Interdisciplinary Research Platform in the Field of Archaeology, Faculty of History, "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iaşi, Romania

AGM Announcment

The AGM and accompanying talk announced

<content1>
The LSS AGM shall take place on the 4th November 2011, at Franks House, London (see map below)
The accompanying talk shall be by ex-chairman Dr Francis Wenban-Smith, and is entitled:
The Clactonian elephant butchery site at Southfleet Road, Swanscombe

Post-excavation work having now been completed, including refitting of the lithic material, it is possible to present a more complete view than in the previous interim report (Wenban-Smith et al. 2006. Journal of Quaternary Science 21: 471-483) of the nature of the site, its age, cultural affinities and evidence of human activity. The quantity of lithic material and its technological consistency confirms the existence in the earlier part of MIS 11 of a distinctive Clactonian industry based on simple, often notched, flake-tools made on flake blanks from loosely structured approaches to core reduction. The Clactonian horizons are overlain by deposits which, conversely, contain a prolific handaxe industry. There are also hints even higher up the sequence of something quite different, that relates to typically poorly recorded finds by Burchell in Rickson/Barracks Pit a short distance to the north. The site as a whole illustrates a number of important interpretive aspects of lithic assemblages, site formation processes and site stratigraphy. Lithic material will be on display to illustrate these matters.

<content1>
Although the Lithic Studies Society shall not be organising a conference in 2011, We are sponsoring
UNRAVELLING THE PALAEOLITHIC: 10 years of research at the Centre for the Archaeology of Human Origins (CAHO, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON (UK))
To highlight the past achievements, current strengths, and future
perspectives of the Center for the Archaeology of Human Origins (CAHO), we would like to announce an open

The symposium is aimed at bringing together past and present CAHO staff and students, whilst also strengthening links with other human origins institutions at home and abroad. Both papers and posters will be presented, centred around four main themes:
Lithic Analyses
Social Approaches to the Palaeolithic
Palaeoclimate and Human Ecology
Bio-anthropological Approaches to the Palaeolithic
Keynote talks will be given by the Centre’s founder, Professor Clive Gamble, and its current director, Dr. John McNabb.

Archaeological Specialists Survey

Landward Research have been commissioned by the Higher Education Academy History Classics and Archaeology Subject Centre and English Heritage to conduct a survey of archaeological specialists.

<content1>

Individual archaeological specialists, providing commercial services in any of the areas of:
- finds study,
- environmental study,
- conservation,
- physical dating,
- survey,
- historical research,
- archiving,
- report production,
- illustration,
- photography,
or any other specialist area are now invited to complete the following short questionnaire.

http://bit.ly/surveyarch

Doing this should take approximately ten minutes of your time, and your contribution will be greatly appreciated.
At the end of the survey, you will have the opportunity to request a copy of the final report once it is published.
The survey will help individual specialists, students, educators and wider sector plan for the future - partly this will be through identifying the impact of the current economic climate upon specialists' work and by identifying any areas where skills losses might affect the capacity of the archaeological profession to provide specialist advice. This will then allow priority areas for the delivery of training to be identified.

The questionnaire is now open until Sunday 13 March 2011.

All answers will be treated in the strictest confidence. Landward Research Ltd is Registered as a Data Controller with the Information Commissioner's Office. All data received will be used only for research purposes. No information that could be used to identify any individual or organisation will be available to any other organisation.
