Last Years' Events (2005):
The
following events have been hosted by the society so far in 2005:
Flint
and Stone in the Neolithic Period: 7th November 2005
This
event was hosted by the Neolithic Studies Group (in
association with the Lithic Studies Society), and
held at the British Museum.
The
Stone Tools of the Piltdown Fraud: 26th October 2005
Dr
John McNabb (Southampton University) presented a talk
on the stone tool assemblages associated with the
Piltdown Fraud (including the first public opportunity to see
the tools in the flesh since the hoax was confirmed). The talk was held at Frank's
House and commenced at 2.30pm.
The
Boscombe Bowman and the Amesbury Archer: 19th January 2005
Phil
Harding (Wessex Archaeology) presented a talk on
these exciting Bronze Age discoveries and their
associated flintwork. The talk was held at Frank's
House and commenced at 2.30pm.
Raw
Material Studies and Knapping Day: 2nd-3rd April 2005
A
Lithic Studies Society weekend conference and
knapping workshop was held in Norfolk, as a follow-up
to the 2004 knapping event. As previously the event
was both well attended and very
successful.
Use
of Lithic Resources Day: 7th May 2005
A
day of lectures covering aspects of raw material
provisioning, transport and use was held on Saturday
May 7th 2005. The day was dedicated to the memory of
R.J. MacRae and included a session devoted to
non-flint raw material in the British Palaeolithic, a
topic whose profile in British Palaeolithic studies
was greatly raised by MacRae's work.
